Don't make the mistake of buying a used piano found on eBay, craigslist, or a dealer without first consulting with a professional piano technician.
There are several things that you can look for when considering a used piano:
- keys that 'stick' or do not produce a sound when played
- notes that 'ring' after you release the key
- cracks in the soundboard or other wooden components
- pedals that make noise when depressed or don't seem to 'do anything'
- evidence of rust and discoloration on the strings and tuning pins when you look inside
- a sound that is tinny or has a 'honky-tonk' quality
While some of these issues may be serious (making the instrument a bad choice) some may be easily and reasonably rectified. Only an expert professional can make that judgment.
